Now That You Can Work From Anywhere, Are You Planning To Move Away?

As many as 23 million Americans are planning to relocate as telework becomes the new normal, according to a new survey. With working from home becoming more permanent, many are planning to set off to live in new places. An astonishing 14 million to 23 million Americans are planning to relocate to a different city, state or region as a result of telework, according to a new study released by Upwork, a freelancing platform. The survey was conducted Oct. 1 to 15 among 20,490 Americans 18 and over.

THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER

Are you planning to move?

Now that most are no longer restricted  to the location of their employer, many are planning to make a move.  My latest client, an engineer for a large semiconductor company, is planning to make a move to Texas.  He shows me picture of the very elegant home he is looking to purchase there. Beautiful stomework, character and a nice pool adorn the font facade. “This is what I can afford there with the sale of my home here and schools have much higher ratings”. This father of son to be two sees teleworking as a permanent option for him and many others working with him. As Facebook announced plans for half of its employees to work from home permanently many other companies are planning the same.

"As our survey shows, many people see remote work as an opportunity to relocate to where they want and where they can afford to live," says Adam Ozimek, chief economist at Upwork. "This is an early indicator of the much larger impacts that remote work could have in increasing economic efficiency and spreading opportunity."

Because many expect to continue to work remotely, more than half seek to relocate over two hours away or even farther from their current home.

WORKING FROM HOME

How about a dedicated home office?

According to a national survey by the United Van, 32% more people compared to last year,  have expressed their interest in making a move. With this new ability to work from home, and the desire for personal and family health and well-being, many desire and choose  to be closer to family, while others simply  want a lifestyle change or to  improve the quality of life.

And while many teleworkers will stay put, working from home often translates in the need for a dedicated home office, a little extra room, or an additional work space. With their work environment changing, their home life is as well and families find themselves outgrowing their space a lot faster now.

A big move can be stressful for a number of reasons. Rely on your local expert to limit your stress and help keep you and your family happy and safe during the big transition. Call me - 503-332-3803
